Exquisite Corpse - Design Meets Story Meets Sound
The Lyceum and Envelope Room are delighted to be working together with composer and sound designer Greg Sinclair on a creative, collaborative workshops for performance designers, sound designers and dramaturgs to work together.
WHAT IS AN EXQUISITE CORPSE?
An exquisite corpse takes it’s name from the childhood drawing game where you collaboratively draw a figure without seeing the part of the drawing that has come before.
Three groups each comprised of a performance designer, sound designer and dramaturg will be assembled to work together. There will be a prompt for each company to respond to in whatever creative way they choose. Each company will then rotate and respond to the work of the previous company (without having seen the initial prompt). At the end of the workshop there will be an informal sharing of the three separate, collaboratively created works.
This aims to be a fun, engaging, informal process without any preparation work required with support from design, sound design and dramaturgy facilitators. The intention of the workshop is to supercharge creative connections between the artists in the room by giving them a chance to engage with each other on an artistic level.

Diving into Sustainability in Performance Design
We are honoured and excited to bring you all the way from Brisbane, Australia, the opportunity to hear award winning Ecoscenographer, Tanja Beer discuss new ways of approaching designing in a sustainable way.
The future of Performance Design and how we create as designers must embrace an environmentally sustainable ethic for the future of our world. The current ecological crisis calls for a new philosophy for theatre production that promotes more ecological (holistic, interconnected and symbiotic) ways of doing things. Designers are trained to work towards Opening Night. How we 'get there' or what happens to our sets and costumes after the production ends is often neither a priority nor a consideration.
This workshop introduces Ecoscenography's theoretical and practical framework and explores new processes and aesthetics of theatrical design that enhance the social and environmental advocacy of the field.
When – Wednesday 14th April, 9am – 11am
Where – Online – Zoom (sorry, we can’t get everyone out to Australia!)
Link will be shared with you nearer the event
Who – This is open to all Performance Designers and theatre makers based and working in Scotland.

Mentor Scheme 2021
Early career designers are an important and often overlooked part of the theatre ecology. We want to shine a light on them and support them during this tough time.
Are you an early career designer or a designer who has reached a point in their career path that would benefit from some mentoring? We are offering 5 sessions with a mentor and have 6 places on offer.
These sessions can be used to support you with a specific project or as ‘standalone’ sessions using a series of questions that you receive before each session to stimulate a discussion (of course you may have your own questions that you want to discuss).
The Envelope Room will pay a small fee of £150 to each mentee to allow them time to focus on their time with their mentor.
To apply, send an email to [email protected] including
The mentors will be chosen in discussion with the mentee, to ensure that you are connected with the right creative person to support you to meet your goals. The sessions will begin in January and run according to the mentee/mentor’s discussion.
All sessions must be undertaken by 30th April 2021.
Closing date for applications Friday 4th December 2020 with the decision being made by Wednesday 9th December 2020.
*we will acknowledge each application to let you know that we have received it.

SketchUp CAD Skills training, touring venues
We're keen to keep up the opportunities to expand your skills and so there will be another SketchUp session looking at planning a tour.
Tim Reid will take you through the helpful points of transferring designs from theatre to theatre and discuss strategies for dealing with limited venue information.
Participants will need their own computer and a free Sketch Up account. (Create a free account by clicking "start modelling" at https://www.sketchup.com/plans-and-pricing/sketchup-free then entering an email address at the sign in page. You'll then be prompted to create an account.)
It would be helpful to have a second screen for running Zoom and seeing Tim's shared screen (this could be an iPad etc or a second monitor on a computer).
A three-button mouse is also recommended, but not essential.
For your information, SketchUp has a new pricing system which makes the pro versions a little but more accessible.
Free: a free web based version, which needs a sign up and works in a browser. It can't import dwg files
Shop: Cheapest paid version - currently $119 per year, it is still web based but it can import dwg
Pro: Web & Desktop app $299 a year (This adds "Layout" - a companion app for making 2D scaled plans from 3D models)
Date: Wednesday 14th October
Location: Zoom
Time: 11am - 1pm
This will be an online event, open to all levels and types of designers, places are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis.
Email us at [email protected] for a place.
If you are still thinking about what CAD package would suit how you work, don't forget that we have the CAD review by Production Manager Niall Black which can help direct you on the resources page.

Take a Seat
With Theatres across Scotland sitting empty, festivals postponed and missing audiences - where do the theatre makers go from here? We are desperate to use our resting creative skills and get back to making work to engage and inspire people.
We want to collectively come together to find a way to celebrate our amazing Scottish theatre industry. Our idea has come from designers and production managers but is open to all who want to grab the opportunity to creatively celebrate our remarkable theatre industry.
A single chair will be our symbol.
"The minute you put a chair on stage, it tells you a period, it tells you a culture, it tells you a civilisation – you can place that space instantly by the information that a chair gives you"
Bob Crowley October 2009
This poignant quote encapsulates a unique vision that Designers have and how visuals stories can tell be told a thousand different way through piece of scenery on a stage.
TAKE A SEAT is a collective response to the spaces we cannot be in, a teeny call to arms, an art installation and love letter to the audiences we are missing and the craft we are committed to.
We want to inspire you to get involved wherever you are…

Designers Having a Voice
We would like to give designers a space to get together and start to discuss, brainstorm, list ways that we can creatively approach our current situation.
We're aware that there are ideas floating about already, what if more heads could help expand those ideas? As designers we are used to problem solving, dealing with spacial design and how people (actors and audiences) interact with spaces. It seems that some of us might have some great ways of making theatre in our current climate.
Join us for a chat on Zoom this week
Date: Thursday 4th June
Time: 4pm - 5.30pm (ish)
Venue: Zoom!
Format: We'll start out as one group but may head into breakout rooms if it helps.

A Monster Calls - Online Group Theatre Trip!
Everyone is chatting about what digital theatre they have been watching, so we thought it might be nice to watch something together!
What: A Monster Calls
Who: Old Vic & Bristol Old Vic Co Pro.
Where: Chat on Zoom, Show on You Tube!
When: Friday 5th June
Time: 7pm (preshow locktails from 6pm)
How will this work you ask?

'The Minty Mojito'
6-8 mint leaves
25ml sugar syrup (1:1)
25ml lime juice
50ml rum
Soda if you want to
Slap the mint and add to the bottom of the glass. Fill with crushed ice. Add the sugar syrup, lime juice and rum. Take a bar spoon with a flat bottom and use the disc to churn the mixture. Add more ice and churn again. You're looking for a frosting on the outside of the glass so that you know the mix is super cold. Cap with more ice so that the glass is full and the ice glistens on top. Add soda if you want to/if there's room at this point. Take your mint sprig and clap it between your hands to release the oils, then place next to a straw in the glass.
(or you could buy it pre made in a can.....)
During the show: We will leave it open for people to use the chat function if they wish (you can obvs ignore this and focus on the show).
Postshow: You can rejoin the room for a post show chat too and another locktail if you like! If we have lots of people we will use breakout rooms.

ABOUT THIS COURSE – Construction (Design & Management) Regulations (CDM)
Construction work is arguably one of the most dangerous activities to undertake, and the building of sets and associated works can be hazardous. To put that statement into context, consider the fact that construction accounts for about 5% of the total UK workforce, yet it’s responsible for 31% of all workplace fatalities. On top of this, there are also 64,000 non-fatal injuries requiring medical treatment and 81,000 cases of work-related ill health every year – at a cost of £1 billion in lost working days.
It’s for this reason that the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations were first introduced. Projects often involve the use of dangerous equipment, materials, vehicles, and locations; they often involve working at height, near or over large drops; or on incomplete structures which may topple or collapse – so when you combine this with the fact that set builds also tend to involve many different people all working on separate tasks, it’s easy to see where accidents can happen.
The CDM Regulations help make the chaos of a project controllable – from start to finish and beyond. By creating roles and responsibilities for key duty holders throughout a project, they ensure that Health & Safety protocols are effectively managed by the right people, and that they are communicated to and followed by everyone.
This CDM Training course breaks the regulations down into three simple sections; the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved; what needs to be planned for at each stage of a construction project; and what needs to be considered in order to keep everyone involved in the building of sets safe and compliant.
This course will be run by Andrew Evans, Andrew works with theatre, arts and entertainment etc. companies to help address specific HSE risks within the sector. He is Scotland's representative at the Health and Safety Executive's Joint Advisory Committee for Entertainment (JACE) forum and works across the sector to apply best practice initiatives and to develop common standards to help deal with sector specific challenges. Andrew is also the Chair of Scotland's Sound Performance Working Group, which he formed with National and other orchestras across Scotland to provide a forum to address the key risk of noise exposure in the music industry.

Critics verses creatives
We are doing something different this year at the fringe and hosting a conversation between designers and critics!

The work of theatre designers and theatre critics can seem worlds apart. But at what point do these professions interact?
We are delighted to have Mark Fisher and Matt Trueman joining lighting designer Simon Wilkinson and set & costume designer Jan Bee Brown to have a chat, alongside Judith Doherty from Grid Iron. We will be asking some questions, listening and hopefully gaining an understanding about each others creative process and thinking. We would be delighted if you could join us!
Event Details:
Date: Monday 15th August
Time: 13:30 (1hr30m)
Venue: Fringe Central @ Infirmary Street: Studio 1
There are 2 ways to book tickets:
Fringe Participant - you can book direct, you'll find details on pg 3 of the Fringe Central programme.

Creatively Curious at the Edinburgh fringe!
We are delighted to announce we are presenting Creatively Curious again at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of their participants programme.
Curious to know what inspires Theatre Makers? So are we! We are inviting artists from far and wide to share what inspires them. Come along and absorb a whirlwind (early) evening of pure visual delights.
We want to create a space where creative folk can share what inspires them thru a similar structure to Pecha Kucha. The idea is you present between 15-20 images over the course of 5-6 minutes which you feel gives a flavour about what inspires you. The images can be of anything, infact they can even be video or music clips - you decide! You could pick a single artist or choose to talk about various inspriations. You could even throw in a picture of your mum.
The event is on Wednesday 19th August at Fringe Central from 5-6pm with informal networking afterwards 6-7pm. So you'll get the chance to chat to fellow artists and share your inspirations further! The event is free to attend so please feel free to come along and watch and take part in the networking even if you don't want to present.
We are really keen to have a mix of theatre artists, you don't have to be a designer. You just need to be happy to share the visual images which you find inspiring and/or which influence your work.
This event is part of our effort to create spaces for designers to meet other professionals and share what excites them in informal settings. It's an ongoing experiment!
Contact Lisa at [email protected] if you would like to present as part of this event. We want to hear from you!

Yer Granny DESIGN EVENT With The National Theatre Of Scotland
We're excited to announce that we've once again teamed up with the National Theatre of Scotland to bring you an event linked to the production of Yer Granny.
Yer Granny is a riotous new comedy about a diabolical 100-year-old granny who’s literally eating her family out of house and home. She’s already eaten their fish and chip shop into bankruptcy and now she’s working her way through their kitchen cupboards, pushing the Russo family to desperate measures just to survive beyond 1977.
The opportunity is for 10 designers to see the show, visit the stage, talk with the production manager and meet the Set and Costume designer, Colin Richmond and the Lighting Designer, Tim Mitchell. This is a fantastic opportunity to discuss the creative challenges involved in staging the production and to find out more about the creative journey which develops throughout the design process.
The event will be most suited to set, costume and lighting designers but is open to all.
Thursday 21st May at the Beacon, Greenock from 11am – the show starts at 7.30pm
If you would like to be a part of this event please email - [email protected]. This is a ‘first come first served’ event so be quick! We are however planning to have a good mix of emerging designers, students and more established designers (when applying, please let us know how much experience you have and what your discipline is).
The deadline is Thursday 7th May 2015 at midnight - we're looking forward to hearing from you!
* Sorry to say but we won't be able to cover travel expenses to this event.

JAMES PLAYS DESIGN EVENT with the National Theatre of Scotland
We're excited to announce that we've teamed up with the National Theatre of Scotland to bring you an event linked to the production of the James Plays.
The James Plays – James I, James II and James III – are a trio of new history plays by award-winning writer Rona Munro. Exhilarating and vividly imagined, they bring to life three generations of Stewart kings who ruled Scotland in the tumultuous fifteenth century. Each play stands alone as a unique vision of a country tussling with its past and future; together they create an intricate and compelling narrative on Scottish culture and nationhood, full of playful wit and boisterous theatricality.
The opportunity is for 10 designers to see all three James plays, visit the stage, talk with the production managers and meet the Designer Jon Bauser for a light lunch. This is a fantastic opportunity to discuss the creative challenges involved in staging the trilogy and to find out more about the creative journey which develops throughout the design process.
We have limited places so it would be ideal to be able to attend all of the shows and the discussion/meet the designer event and priority will be given to those who can manage this but we are aware that it is a busy time for everyone.
The event will be most suited to set and costume designers but is open to all, we are hoping to be able to have a mixture of both emerging designers and more experienced designers.
The dates are
Sunday 3rd August at 7.30pm – James I : The Key Will keep The Lock
Wednesday 6th August at 7.30pm – James II : Day of The Innocents
Friday 8th August at 7.30pm – James III : The True Mirror
Wednesday 6th August. 11am – 1pm - Meet the Designer and the Production Managers
The shows all run at approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh*. More information can be found here at the National Theatre of Scotland's website. These shows are ''open dress rehearsals'' and not previews that are open to the public.
If you would like to be apart of this event please email - [email protected] with a brief introduction ( a very basic biography would be good) and a couple of lines explaining why you'd like to come along.
The deadline is Tuesday 29th July 2014 at midnight - we're looking forward to hearing from you!
